Welcome to My Red Cape. Long ago in another time my husband Jack and I lived in a little old red house. It was the stuff of dreams to us for the few years that we were there. I live there still a number of hours every day in imagination, with old dolls and paintings and fabrics and feather trees. I draw inspiration and happiness from the memories of that space in time and share some of it here with friends who remember how to step with Alice through the looking glass and take delight in whimsies and antiquities. ~Edyth O’Neill

My letter to Barb Carroll this am

Dear Barb, thanks for all you have sent, drawings, encouraging emails and LOVE. I am excited about the new patterns, and many people have seen the two drawings on my table and are asking when the patterns will be available. I hope to have 5 new ones all together this spring.

Tuesday and also Wednesday of this week Trish Travis brought a dozen or so rug hookers from San Antonio to visit in our home and hook here and see my rugs and All seemed to have a good time. Surely I did, even though I went to bed each day as they left! This has prompted Trish to offer to schedule a few workshops here the way Rita Rundquist did for me. I do not have to do any of the business part, just enjoy the rugs with the guests and share all I can with them to help with their projects. All will hook only my designs, as that makes it easier for me, not because I think mine are all the good ones in this world!! We plan a 3 day workshop, with the participants probably driving from SA daily, though some may book lodging here in Fburg if they like. We would hook in our house, and break for people to leave and eat lunch. I can nap at the noon break.

So with this small window of opportunity this past week, I took off with Debbie F's idea of inviting people to hook on some of the rugs I want to have and cannot hook a lot on myself due to problems with my thumbs. Starting with your Moby Dick, I set the pattern on the dining table and had out cut wool, as well as a few of the motifs started, and a number of people hooked a few lines. Remember they were all here just 2 1/2 hours each day, and did a lot besides hook on my rug! The doll collection was a major attraction for one thing.

In the several evenings I worked a very little, plus those two days, several motifs are under way. Trish then asked to take the Moby rug home with her to hook further. It is a beautiful runner and sized so well for the center of our dining table. I Like nautical things and have several in that room. I am lucky and grateful to have friends who will do this for me! Thanks to Debbie for thinking of this!

One I am excited about is the big new Hadley! As soon as I get a pattern from you on linen, I will start to accumulate and cut the wool and get it in bags. The rug will go in our living room I hope. It is much the same design as the welcome, just more of it. I love the huge tulips.
I still have the 1790 eagle rug only started, started 4 years ago to try to replace the one lost in the fire. It is in my room in a basket, and I must get it out! Stay in touch when you can, thanks again for encouraging me, as you always inspire everyone around you! Love. Edyth

Rug hooking is great for a cold day like this one!

With the young ones inside more, this is a lovely opportunity to pass down the handcrafts we love. These pictures show Elizabeth and Hailey in years past. So far Elizabeth has done a significant weaving, 2 hooking projects, (partial) some knitting and a bunch of small crocheted pieces like hair bands, a simple purse etc. She also paints often. Hailey is very competitive with sports right now but in the future she will know that she can hook or knit when she has that inclination.

One project in our family at present is making a rug for the little brother Elizabeth is expecting soon. The little boy will be my second great grandchild. Our hooked rug for his cowboy themed nursery is a Texas flag, and 4 generations of us are hooking on it, (just a tiny bit in my case) and it will have initials from each of us.

Next September I will teach a class at the Star of Texas Rug camp here in Fredericksburg. I am having fun designing some new rug patterns. Barb Carroll of Woolley Fox prints and distributes all of my rug designs. I hope to show some here on my blog soon. I have sold almost all of my book, "Red Cape Rugs" now, and am selling on the last two boxes of them. Thanks everyone who bought one!! If you need a copy, email for directions.
I am having a wonderful time in a painting class this week for just 4 afternoons, painting with Chuck Mauldin, a local artist whose work I admire. Art is a never ending learning experience, open ended joy. A quote I can't give proper attribution to, goes something like this: "Art is too much fun to be confined to those who are good at it!".

A Run on Blackeyed Peas!

Did you eat your black eyed peas today? You weren't alone! Our daughter Tanya called us early this morning to say the shelves of our local supermarket were bare of black eyed peas..every other type of bean was available in great supply, pinto, baked, kidney, ranch style etc. Seems like an unusual number of Americans are taking no chances, we are all looking for luck in this difficult time. I did locate 2 cans at a smaller store in town. We are not superstitious, but we ate our Black eyed peas! Best wishes to each of you in the coming new year! Edyth

Happy New year and merry Christmas all in one dear friends. The time just flies does it not? We have 7 households of our family here now, and so are much involved in all of their activities. All of our grown children but one live here, and all of our grand children are here, and one great grand and another coming soon! They all need something constantly. Jack's parents are 91 and 97 and a handful for him to care for! They are still in their own home, but no longer drive or go out much. Jack does all the errands and fixing and yard work and on and on, in between times he drives Grandchildren and keeps everything else going! Old John won't keep the doors closed behind his wheelchair so he found and killed a very significant snake in his kitchen sink this am!! Fortunately my fragile little MIL did not see it. Something every minute, but most of it good. Hope each of you are holding your own, Best, E

Sharing our Christmas preparations

Two days till Christmas!

Good morning Rachael. Thank you for sugggestions of a name for my new doll. I have not settled on one yet, am considering Bridgette, we did have a lovely white cashmere goat of that name a few years ago. I miss the goats. Jack is outside now cutting magnolia leaves for me to use in the house. Incredibly there are two lovely white blooms this week, high in the top of the young but tall tree.
Our black Cat Cleopatra is helping Jack, she goes about with us all the time when we are outside, as a dog would. She will even go to the car door to greet guests who drive up and stop. Cleo moved here with us from the farm.
She was running along before me one day at the farm, when I was carrying large flower pots out in front of me and in 8 or 10 inch grass, unable to see where I was walking. If Cleo had not been ahead of me in her friendly way, I would never have seen the rattler till I stepped on all 5 feet of him. Cleo caused the snake the rear up and rattle and I saw it in time to retreat loudly! She is a highly regarded cat!
Christmas cooking and decorating and wrapping are in full swing here. Warmly, Edyth

How do you Store your Feather trees?

Thanks all for well wishes! I am on the mend. We had a Norman Rockwell Thanksgiving at daughter Beth's home, and wish all the families in this world could be as warmly happy as we were. 8 of the children and 2 of the adults climbed nearby Enchanted Rock after the big lunch.
Elizabeth painted her new point shoes with artist's acrylics. Her dancing is such a big part of her life, and she has a dancer's barr and mirror in her bedroom.
I love that she paints a bit so am including it as a proud Grandmother should.
Today, Saturday after Thanksgiving, we are getting out our Christmas trees. (No they are not holiday trees) How do you store your feather trees? We store ours in my work area over my sewing machine. Hung from the ceiling in a simple rack they take up no space and the branches are not damaged. Best, Edyth
